E-Stop, A world first!

From 8 to 12 September, the “Canal Seine-Nord Europe” company, and Bouygues Travaux Publics France tested the new Develon DX230LC-9 excavator equipped with the E-Stop device, which stops the machine's movements when a pedestrian enters its work zone.

Preventing collisions between machines and pedestrians on public works sites is a collaborative effort carried out as part of the Stop Collision project.

Develon Demonstrates E-Stop

Develon’s new 9 Series Excavators are brimming with advanced technological features, including an all-new system that will automatically stop a machine’s movement, when a person is detected within 4 m of the machine.

Develon recently took up an invitation from OPPBTP, The French Professional Organisation for Prevention in the Construction and Public Works Sector, to showcase this feature.

Stéphane Dieu, Product Manager for Excavators in Europe, and Gilles Bendaoud, Key account manager, emphasise that: "The OPPBTP's invitation provided the opportunity to present our innovative technologies for reducing accident risks on earthmoving sites.

Thanks to Sébastien Marie of the OPPBTP and to the Société du Canal Seine-Nord Europe (SCSNE), these useful innovations will be able to be adopted on the Seine-Nord Europe Canal construction site. Congratulations to the Bouygues Travaux Publics teams for conducting these tests and for their positive feedback on the E-Stop system. In addition, representatives from four other companies, including Eiffage, attended the demonstration, as well as representatives from the government, the SCSNE and the FNTP.

OPPBTP is an organisation founded in 1947, to raise the importance of health and safety issues in the construction sector, and is dedicated to the prevention of accidents and occupational risks.

Since 2022, the OPPBTP has been participating in the "Stop Collision" project, designed to eliminate the risk of collisions between vehicles and pedestrians

9 Series: Safety and Smart Features

The Smart All-Around Viewing Monitor (SAVM) is an AI-powered object detection technology that effectively detects people, whether moving or stationary, near machinery. When detected, the operator is immediately alerted on the monitor via a combination of visual signals and audible alarms, ensuring full awareness of their surroundings.

The SAVM and E-Stop systems rely on six cameras and three radars and offer a detection range of 6 m at 330°, with three levels of assistance. The system activates only if it detects personnel, thus distinguishing between humans and objects:

  • Visual detection of personnel using high-definition cameras
  • Warning and slowing of the machine when a human is within 6 m
  • Stopping of the machine when a human is within 4 m (pivoting and reversing)

E-Stop is an essential safety device designed to control or stop moving machines in risk or danger zones, particularly during driving or steering, and by extension to ensure operator safety. The virtual barrier function significantly improves machine usability by limiting its movements to predefined areas where the risk of collision may be increased.
